CBSE to address maths woes
CBSE to address maths woes

NEW DELHI: CBSE has promised to "protect interests of the students" who had suffered due to the unusual difficulty level of the Class XII mathematics paper on March 18. Besides the post-evaluation moderation, all students will be given full four marks for the question on vector as there was a printing error, said a source in the committee of subject experts.

The question paper, scores of students and teachers have complained, is the toughest in a decade. The issue had come up for discussion in Parliament and the human resource development ministry has asked Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to address the grievances.

According to senior officials, the committee of subject experts is examining the feedbacks received for all subjects and are finalizing the marking schemes to be followed during the evaluation. "There are feedbacks on difficulty levels mostly for three subjects—mathematics, physics and English," said a source. "All possible efforts will be made to protect interests of the students," CBSE public relations officer Rama Sharma said. Following the hue and cry, the board had also called a meeting of a few select principals.

According to teachers, nearly 50% of the paper required higher order thinking skills (HOTS), while such questions are usually restricted to 10% to 20%. While all concepts were from the syllabus, the paper was full of tricky and application-based questions.
