The function of the thyroid gland is to regulate the speed of the body’s metabolism. In other words, this gland converts the food we eat into energy for the body.
When this gland is not operating properly, it causes all kinds of symptoms of thyroid problem described below, and it does not convert the food we eat into energy. The thyroid gland makes two hormones, thyroxine-T4 (with four iodines) and triiodothyronine T3 (with three iodines). T4 blood levels are higher than those of T3, but T3 is four times more potent. Normally the body converts T4 to T3 as needed. |
