900,000 tons of pollutants surround each power station

Biochemistry professor at Kuwait University Dr. Lamia Johar asserted that Kuwait's shores suffer a 100 percent pollution rate when compared to other Gulf Cooperation Council shores. She also noted that two kilometers range into the sea surrounding power stations have no life as a result of the high temperature of the water that flow from the stations to the sea, where the temperature reaches 44 degrees Celsius; it should normally be at 28 degrees Celsius. She added, during a lecture organized yesterday by the Ministry of Electricity and Water, that each power station produces approximately 900,000 tons of pollutants.
She called for using renewable energy, instead of solely depending on oil. She warned against the Sebbeyya Bridge project, and accused the engineers of illegally obtaining their engineering degrees, since the project lacks any environmental standards that should be followed in such projects. The ministry's undersecretary Ahmed Al-Jassar responded to Johar's attack by saying that all projects are accepted only after receiving environmental approvals from the concerned authorities, and stated that the ministry is keen on using alternative energy sources, such as solar energy, which will aid in feeding the growing demand for power during the near future. |
