Finance panel nods to maid recruitment company
Elsewhere, the National Assembly Financial and Economic Affairs Committee approved a draft law calling yesterday to set up a shareholding company for the recruitment of domestic helpers from abroad. Head of the committee MP Faisal Al-Shaye said the panel also introduced some amendments to a draft law regulating the rights of domestic helpers in Kuwait in order to be in line with the first bill. The assembly health and labor committee rejected the bill several weeks ago to form the shareholding company saying that several government agencies had refused to take part. As a result, MP Kamel Al-Awadhi who was behind the law asked the National Assembly to take the proposal from the health panel and give it to the financial committee because it is more concerned with financial issues. Following the approval, secretary of the health committee MP Saadoun Hammad said that the financial committee has no right to introduce any amendments to the maids rights law because it was approved by the health panel. He said he will oppose the amendments when the law comes up for debate in the National Assembly, adding that the health panel had approved a comprehensive law for domestic helpers on the basis that 400 private recruitment offices operate in the country. Hammad also said that government agencies have changed their opinion after rejecting the maids company in the health panel and later accepting it in the financial committee. MP Shaye went on to point out that the financial committee approved the 2016/2017 development plan which stipulates projects costing KD 4.6 billion for 275 projects. He said that 245 of the projects are from the previous years while the rest are small new projects. The plan is expected to be debated and approved next session.
