Kuwait anti-smoking campaign targets youth
Kuwait's national anti-smoking campaign intends to decrease the average of smokers among youth by five percent in the next five years, it was announced on Saturday.

Permanent Rapporteur for the Campaign Hamdiya Al-Fadhli on the occasion of World Anti-smoking Day in two days' time, revealed that figures indicate to a rise in the number of smokers in Kuwait due to several reasons including the increase of adverts that promote smoking, the easy availability of cigarettes in co-ops and shops and the lack of control over their purchase for the under aged.
The campaign aims at protecting non-smokers and protecting them from second hand smoking and raising awareness among citizens over the dangers of smoking, she added.
She also noted to a rise in smoking among youth, along with a rise in the average of people affected with respiratory illnesses, lung cancer and heart disease as a result of cigarette smoking and water-pipe smoking among women.

The campaign has managed to organise a strategy on the national scale to combat tobacco usage through several health awareness programs, being able to get a law on the prevention of smoking in Health Ministry buildings ratified and constructing 'no-smoking clinics' throughout the country.
The campaign also intends to add anti-smoking awareness to school curriculum in association with the Ministry of Education.

This year's World Anti-smoking Day in Kuwait will witness a number of activities in local malls which target raising awareness on the issue during the last week of May, Al-Fadhli concluded.
