Kuwait considering plan to deport expats involved in three grave crimes

Manama: Kuwait is considering a plan to deport any expatriate implicated in three offenses of grave nature.

Offenses include assaulting the police, involvement in fights or stabbing cases, making major traffic violations, lack of compliance with the law, and cases of attempted murder and possession of drugs.

The deportation will be part of measures to be adopted by the interior ministry to curb crimes, reinforce compliance with the law and impose greater respect of the police forces, security sources told local daily Al Siyassah.

The security agencies will not wait for the verdicts in the cases referred to the courts and will not consider legal settlement procedures or out of court agreements, the sources added.

“The agencies will go ahead with the deportations to ensure they are the best deterrents against anyone who may commit offenses or violations,” the sources said on Saturday.

The ministry’s decision to resort to deportation was attributed to the conclusions by studies based on statistics that most of the law violation cases in Kuwait were committed by expatriates from various nationalities.

Foreigners make up a majority -- around two thirds, of Kuwait’s population, estimated to be around 3.3 million people.

Most expatriates are Asian domestic helpers and unskilled labourers in the construction sectors and across a wide number of services.

According to Assistant Undersecretary for Public Security Affairs Major General Abdul Fattah Al Ali, more than 700 security checkpoints are set up weekly all over Kuwait to deal with any form of law violation.

“They are part of the strategy to reinforce public order and security in some areas with a high density of population with law-breaking cases,” he said. “Our statistics indicate that following the setting up of the security checkpoints, there was a drop in the number of cases of theft, brawls, recklessness, and shootings. As the region is going through tense times, the security agencies are fully ready to deal with any situation. The number of patrols and security measures has been reinforced to counter any possible criminal violations or acts of terrorism. We are fully resolved to apply the law and to ensure security in the country,” he said.
