MoH Working To Improve Status Of Nurses: Official

KUWAIT CITY, May 20: Assistant Undersecretary for Support Health Services at Ministry of Health Dr Jamal Al-Harbi revealed that 60 percent of the nursing staff in the hospitals affiliated to the Ministry of Health is Indian citizens, reports Aljarida daily. He revealed that there are totally 18,500 nurses registered under the ministry, adding that the ministry is working on improving the status of the nurses due to the importance of their role in developing the medical services provided in the country. Meanwhile, Kuwait Medical Association insisted that doctors should not be accused or judged unfairly and quickly for incidents which are being investigated by the Ministry of Interior. In a press statement, Secretary General of KMA Dr Mohammad Al-Qenai said reports with accusations are being spread regarding the death of a patient during a surgery, insisting that through such reports, privacy is not being respected and judgments are being made quickly, which is unacceptable while the issue is still under investigation. He demanded for a law to provide doctors with immunity from issues related to medical complications, with the aim of protecting the rights of both the doctors and the patients. Errors Al-Qenai stressed that people should differentiate between medical errors and medical complications and leave such issues to the decision-makers in the concerned investigation committee or the courts. Meanwhile, Undersecretary of Ministry of Health Dr Khalid Al-Sahlawi issued a circular regarding the decisions taken by a special committee which was formed to organize the work process of the ministry employees who are paid based on the wage system, reports Al-Rai daily quoting informed sources. They affirmed that these employees will have to compulsorily comply with the fingerprint attendance system, will have fixed work timings from 7:30am to 2pm and will not be able in the evenings, as per the circular. The sources also revealed that these employees will not be able to work in the primary health care and the services of those who do not work for 15 consecutive days will be ended. They added that the services of non-Kuwaitis who work in the evenings as well as those without bank accounts will be ended. In another development, Clinical Radiology Consultant and Chairperson of Early Detection of Breast Diseases Project Dr Hanaa Al-Khawari has called on the public to encourage women to undergo mammography periodically once they reach 40 years old, reports Al-Rai daily. Al-Khawari disclosed the project targets about 140,000 Kuwaiti women based on statistics from the Public Authority for Civil Information in 2014. She said the rate of detection is eight cases per 1,000 women tested; indicating this is relatively high compared to Europe and America where the ratio is around four and five cases per 1,000 women.
