More Is at Stake Than Saving an Old Stadium in Paterson

It sits like a great ruin on a bluff above the Great Falls, a graffiti-spattered, poured concrete, Art Deco monument to better times in the Rodney Dangerfield of New Jersey cities.
You enter through a tear in the chain link fence behind the rickety old scoreboard, innards gouged out, wires hanging down, and survey a place that’s not past the point of no return but probably nearing it — trees growing in the stands, a sinkhole in the east end zone and a steep drop in what’s left of the old running track, past the pile of rubble and bricks. Arsonists and vagrants have set numerous fires. If the ghosts returned, they would barely recognize it. |
