What are tears for?
Tears keep the delicate surface of the eyeball clean and wet. Tears are produced in glands (called lacrimal) above the outer corner of the eye. They spread across the eye surface with each blink. A blink takes about a third of a second, and most people blink about every six seconds; when you add it up you spend more than half an hour each day blinking! Tears that wash across the eye usually evaporate into the air or drain into tear ducts, two tiny canals located at the inner corner of each eyelid. From there they pass down into the nose, where they keep nasal tissues moist. (That's why you have to blow your nose when you've been crying.) When you cry or get something in your eyes, you may produce more tears than the system ordinarily handles, and they may spill out onto your face.
