Glenveagh National Park

The Glenveagh National Park is situated in the hub of Derryveagh Mountains in the northwestern part of Co. Donegal. It is an isolated place with impressively immaculate lakes and striking rugged mountain wilds. The national park is spread on an area of 16,000 hectares and it comprises of three major regions. The ex- Glenveagh Estate, is the biggest of all these areas and it constitutes a major portion of the Derryveagh Mountains.

Some of the wild lives you can spot at this park are hares, golden plover, peregrine falcon, ravens. You will also be welcomed by the biggest inhabitant of the park, the red deer.

You can also spot a variety of migratory birds like African Chiffchaff, spotted fly catcher, etc. The Irish native and rare bird, the wooden warbler can also be found here.

Until 1912, the Golden Eagle was a common bird at Glenveagh National Park, but late it became extinct. Six Golden Eagles were introduced in 2001, and 42more were released in 2005. Since Golden eagle breed only, when they are 5 to 6 year of age, it is assumed that some 6 to 8 pairs would be breeding presently.

The short winter days are the ideal time to witness the Golden birds.
