You will find the church interiors was created by excavating and constructed into the rock. Thorough the glassy dome, the natural light comes into the interiors. Because of its brilliant acoustics, the church is often utilized as a venue for holding concerts. The uneven, almost unworked, raw surface makes sure of the quality of acoustics. Initially it was not on the construction agenda, to leave the church interiors exposed, however Paavo Berglund, the famous Finnish conductor narrated to the Architect brothers about his experience in the best music venues. Mauri Parjo, the acoustical engineer laid out the needs for the wall surfaces. It was discovered by the Architect brothers the needs could be fulfilled, by leaving the rock walls in exposed form, in the church corridor.
Because of its unique construction, the Rock Church is a much sought after tourist destination among travelers coming to Finland. Every year, nearly half a million tourists visit the Rock church.
You will not find any bells inside the church. Taneli Kuusisto’s bell recording composition is played on the external wall by means of loudspeakers.
