Oman's State Council okays report on expatriates

Muscat: State Council on Wednesday approved the report of the Special Committee on legislation for regulating expatriate labour in Oman, at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al Manthri, chairman of the State Council.
The meeting discussed the study on 'Legislation Regulating Expat Labour'. Abdul Qadir bin Salim Al Dhahab, chairman of the Special Committee in-charge of the study, reviewed the efforts made in this regard.
The meeting approved the study. The committee will put it in its final form after taking into consideration the remarks made by members.
The study on expatriate labour confirmed that the regulating laws and regulations are adequate and appropriate for the labour market and that they do not need any change or modification.
"But they should be activated in the labour market," it said.
Oman's State Council okays report on expatriates

The study stated that there is an urgent need to make amendments to the Commercial Register Act, especially those related to labour visas granting regulations. The State Council meeting also approved the suggestions raised by the Culture and Information Committee on the development of Omani Press's role and upgrading its position, both domestically and internationally.
Dr Ibrahim Al Subhi, Chairman of the Culture and Media Committee delivered a speech in which he thanked the Council on behalf of the committee for the fruitful cooperation of the Council's officials.
The committee put the proposal in its final form in the light of the discussions that took place during the meeting.
The session concluded with a review of the reports submitted by the Secretariat on the activities of the Council for the period between 9th and 10th regular sessions and the 11th and 12th regular session of the fourth annual sitting of the fifth term, and some reports about the activities of the members and their internal and external participations.
