4,094 illegal workers arrested in Qassim

RIYADH: As many as 4,094 illegal workers have been arrested in the Qassim region since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Maj. Badr Al-Suhaibani, police spokesman for the Qassim region, said that those arrested were violators of residency and work regulations.
The operations were carried out with the coordination of the labor department in Buraidah. A large number of violators were arrested in the region during the month of Shaban too.
“We carried out the raids in institutions, shops, malls and industrial complexes,” Al-Suhaibani said.
During the operation, the police cordoned off the targeted areas to block the illegal workers from running away from the scene.
Law enforcement authorities conduct regular inspections to apprehend illegal workers to curb crimes such as thefts, sorcery, employing illegal workers and brewing liquor.
According to officials, most crimes in the Kingdom are committed by illegal residents who overstay their visas, necessitating crackdown against them.
During the amnesty period offered by the late King Abdullah, iIlegal residents were allowed to leave the Kingdom without any penalties during the grace period.

The Ministry of Interior had earlier advised all illegal expatriates in the Kingdom to correct their work and residency status, following the end of the amnesty period on Nov. 1, 2013, or leave the country.
The official said that those arrested will be investigated, fined and repatriated depending on the nature of their respective cases.
