Banks issue fraud alert for holidays
RIYADH: Saudi Arabian banks have warned customers to be wary of con men trying to steal their credit card and account details during the upcoming holidays. Talat Hafiz, secretary general of the Media and Banking Awareness Committee of Saudi Banks, said fraudsters are more active because there are much greater electronic transactions during vacation periods. Hafiz was speaking at a press conference, which saw the launch of the banks’ fifth awareness campaign on electronic fraud. Saudi Banks President Mohamed Al-Rabiah and member Wael Al-Amoudi were also present. Hafiz said that last year there were 17,600 complaints from customers, but this was a negligible number compared to the 1.5 billion ATM transactions concluded during the same period. He said there was growing awareness among the customers in the Kingdom about bank fraud. He advised customers not to reveal their bank details to anyone, even close friends. They should also not reply to e-mails sent by unknown people promising prizes and discounts to promote their products. Any suspicious mails can be referred to their respective banks, he said. إعلان “It is the responsibility of customers to be alert, but Saudi banks are also making every effort to tackle fraud,†he said. “Customers need to be extra careful with online banking systems, by equipping their computers with the most effective anti-virus and malware protection software.†The Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) and the Capital Market Authority (CMA) were playing a leading role in awareness campaigns, he said.
