Paint factory racket busted, expats held

A gang of illegal workers has been arrested in Riyadh for manufacturing paint using primitive methods and claiming they were made in the US and Italy.
An official from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the plant was shut down and the manufactured products, as well as raw material, were confiscated.
The discovery was made by a team of inspectors from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry during its routine inspections in the industrial areas of the capital as part of its anti-commercial fraud campaign throughout the Kingdom.
The paint factory, which is located in Al Shifa industrial district, south of Riyadh, was producing paints and industrial solvents in primitive ways and against health and environmental regulations of the Kingdom.
The inspectors also found large quantities of flammable hazardous material inside tanks prepared for the same purpose.
In addition to arresting the workers, who have no legal status, the owner of the factory has been summoned for investigation and necessary procedures against him, the official said.
The inspection team also found that the paints were being prepared without any laboratory specifications on the mixture of chemicals, which could harm both the workers and users.
The official said that the ministry would continue its efforts to track down such activities in the trade and industrial areas and take strict action, which may include fines. “Such activities put the health and safety of consumers at risk,” he added.

The ministry has called on all consumers to report complaints and observations to the notification center of the ministry through the toll-free number 1900.
