Education system in Bahrain

At the beginning of the century the only form of education that were available in Bahrain is the Quranic schools (kuttab).The schools were conventional schools, that were meant to teach the kids and the youth, to effectively understand the holy Quran.

A number of people in Bahrain felt that this type of conventional education does not meet the academic standards that contest with the age spirit. Subsequent to the First World War, things got transformed and under the western resurgence, country has become broadly open.

Free public education system

In the year 1919, the Government of Bahrain introduced the free public education system to the gulf region. The aim of the government is to offer free educational prospects to all the children. Only recently, education was made mandatory. According to the 1999 assessment, the public expenditure for edcutional purpose was assessed at 3.7% GDP.

Stages of Education

It was estimated that for the year 2000, the adult literacy rate was at 12.4%, (males, 9.0%; females, 17.3%) In eh Arabian gulf, Bahrain is the only country to have the highest literacy rate Up to the year 1999, the female share of primary enrollment was found to beat the rate of be 48.7%. Arabic is the official language of the country. However English is also broadly spoken. The school education in Bahrain comprises of three stages. The Primary education will last up to a period of six years. The intermediate course is three year duration. The secondary stage in general is commercial of industrial and lasts for three years.

Both the primary and secondary curriculum comprises of a nine year religious study course. Almost 100% of the children attend the primary school, while 85% of the kids attend the secondary school. In the year 1997, nearly 72,876 students got enrolled in primary schools, whilst 57,184 students got enrolled in secondary schools.


University

The Arabia Gulf University was created in the year 1980. It has faculties in engineering, science and medicine.

The University of Bahrain is the primary university in Bahrain, which was established in the year 1986, subsequent to the unification of Gulf polytechnic and University College. The Bahrain university has five colleges, a centre for English: colleges for arts, science, education, engineering and business administration. In fact eh University is a joint venture project amongst Iraq and the six Gulf Cooperation Council members. These countries are allotted with 10%of the sears (total 70%), whilst the left over 30% is provided to other nations.

Another prominent institure in the country is the Bahrain Training Institute which presently has over fifty percent of the female students.
