Family

The Fiji society is native and a lot of significance is given to the families, the land (vanua), and villages. A chiefs’ hierarchy supervises the tribes, rural communities, and kinfolks. The positions of the chiefs are hereditary. A kinswoman or man habitually follows a departed chief. The new chief need not be the dead cheif‘s daughter or son. This replicates the power of Polynesia, in majority society of Melanesia and on the basis of merit the chiefs are appointed.


Yavusa is the biggest Fijian’s communal unit. Subsequent to the death of mother r or father, the succession of chiefs takes place from the eldest sister or brother to the youngest sister or brother.


In a Fijian family, every brother or sister forms his individual yavusa branch known as the Mataqali. Every mataqali becomes a particular task’s guardian.


Most of the Fijians live an extended family life. Several families and inhabitants share a single house. People prefer to sleep on floors. Only little privacy can be found.


Food

The people of Fiji eat traditional foods. They prefer to eat sitting on floors on a floor mat. Some of the conventional foods comprise of sweet potatoes, rice, Cassava, fish and cocunut. Even though the global cuisines are available the local Fiji food along with the Indian delicacies are immensely popular.


Some of the popular foods of the nation are Breadfruit, Duruka, Kakoda, Rourou, and lovo. Only in certified bars and hotels, alcohols are served. Some of the preferred Fiji national drinks are Fiji Bitter, Carlton, Suvanna Moselle, and Meridan Moselle.


Dress

The customary dress is loins clothes and grass skirts for men and women respectively. Single women wear short skirts, while the married ones wear lengthy skirts. Prior to marriage, women wear virgin locks.


Sulu is the national dress of present day Fiji. It is akin to a skirt. Normally both the men and women wear it. 'Sulu va Taga' called as Sulu Vah Tanga is a one type of Sulu dress worn by men as well as by women. It is a drape about a rectangular material piece that is extensively ornamented with changeable style patterns and designs.


Sports

The Fiji people are basically spots buffs. They play a variety of games. Some of the popular sports played in the island nation are Football, Rugby, athletics, boxing, surfing, cricket, Sailing martial arts, etc.
