Japan Education System

Education in Japan is mandatory both at the elementary and lower secondary level. Subsequent to the World War II, in the yar1947, the Fundamental Law of Education and School Education Law were endorsed beneath the occupation forces. Later the law was amended into elementary school for six years , junior school for three years , high school for three years and university for two or four years. This educational system is effect till date.

School Grades

In Japan, the school year commences from April and the classes are conducted form Monday to Friday or Saturday relying on the school. Generally, there are three terms for a school year and the small holidays in spring and winter separate the three terms with a summer break for one month.

Kindergarten is from 3 to 6years

Elementary school (Compulsory Education) is form 6 to 12 years

Junior high School /Lower Secondary school is from 12 years to 15 years.

High school / Upper secondary school is from 15 to 18 years.

Junior High School

The Lower Secondary School encompasses the seventh, eight, and ninth grades for students between 12 to 15 years with enlarged focal point on academic studies. In Junior high school, the instruction seems to be in the lecture method. Other Medias were also utilized by the teachers like radio and television. Nearly 45% of the junior high school had computers by the year 1989.

High School

Although high school is not mandatory, by the year 2005, 94% of the junior high school graduates got into high schools. Out of 55% of the upper secondary school, 55% are private.Fees are collected both at the public and private schools, none is free.

Universities and colleges

By the year 2005, nearly 2.8 million students got registered in 726 universities. For bachelor’s degrees four year education is provided and for a professional degree, six years education is provided. The public four year colleges are of two types. There are 96 national universities (as well as open university of Japan), 39 local public universites founded by municipalities and prefectures.

The top ranking universities in the country is the University of Tokyo, Keio University, Kyoto University, and Waseda University.
