Only in first half of the 20th century, Qatar had tentative beginnings in the educational sector, where the students were taught in the conventional ‘katabeeb’ schools. Various subjects were taught, but without a proper system. From those premature days, the Qatar education system has made immense leaps and bounds attaining all the way to the maximum stages. A mandatory policy and uninterrupted education is being followed by Qatar and almost all its citizens receive education free of cost, thereby reflecting the identity of the country and offering equivalent oppurtunities to everyone.

Literacy

In the year 1985, the literacy in Qatar was found to be around74%. It touched an anticipated 81% by the year 2000.

Eradication of Illiteracy

The primary education center for adults and illiteracy elimination was instituted in the year 1954. Two years later, in 1956, regular classes we conducted in seven schools with a total of 614 students. In the year 1976, two centers for ladies were started. Elementary schooling for a period of four year was provided to the Illiterate students subsequent which they were provided the literacy certificates. Incentive allowances of QR 150 for each month are also provided to these students. The Qatar ministry for education and culture makes sure that the subjects studied are apt for the students’ emotional requirements and that the education imparted to the female students are pertinent to the requirements for women.

Qatar follows a mandatory policy for education till the completion of elementary phase and gives free education to all its citizens. The fundamental education comprises of the subsequent stages

Elementary Stage: It consists of six years.

Preparatory stage: This stage comprises of three years.

Secondary stage: This stage also consists of three years.

Overall the country possesses 113 elementary schools, out of which 60 are for the boys and 53 are for the girls. A total of 56 prepatory schools are located in Qatar out of which 28 schools are for the boys and 28 schools are for the girls. Forty one secondary schools are present in the country, of which 19 schools age for the boys and 22 for the girls.

The Qatar government schools also provide education free of cost for the kids of non-Qatari occupants, who are working for the public sector. The country also has private schools and also various Arab community schools such as the Jordanian, Lebanese, and Sudanese schools in addition to the non-Arab societies such as the Indian, American and other national schools.

Curriculum

Fundamental literacy and numeracy skills are emphasized by the curriculum of primary and inermediate cycles. The Secondary school stresses on the training the students for university, vocational and technical teaching, or for joining directly the workforce.

Higher Education

In Qatar, the university education was established in the 1970s, when two educational colleges each one for men and women was separately started in 1973. In 1985, the novel Qatar university campus was formally opened. The following faculties are present in the University.

The above mentioned faculty has both male and female students, with the faculty of Engineering were only male students are allowed to study. The academic staffs consist of experts from Qatar, Arab countries and also from other foreign nations.
