Wawel Castle, Kraków

Krakow is one of the second biggest and ancient cites in Poland. The city is situated on the Banks of the Vistula river and is a very prominent tourist destination.

Informally, Krakow is regarded as Poland’s cultural capital. There are number of major tourist sports in the city, and the Wawel Castle, is considered a famous one.

Under the command of the Casimir III the Great, the last emperor of Poland, the Gothic style Wawel Castle was built. It comprises of several buildings about a central patio, structures like the Danish tower and the Kurza Stopka (Hen's Foot) was later added to the castle.

You will find the castle situated on a limestone hill and from the castle you can have a panoramic view of the magnificent Krakow city and the beautiful Vistula River. On to the right side of the castle, you can see the stunning Wawe cathedral. A sculpture in remembrance to the late Pope John Paul II has been installed across the cathedral. You can also visit the beautiful royal garden.

There is a Dragon’s den underneath the castle. It is also called as the Dragon cave and ismade up of limestone. At the cave’s entrance, you will find a fire breathing Wave Dragon statue. There is underground pond inside the cave, in which a rare crustacean species exists. The organism is regarded as a Tertiary sea fauna relict.

Inside the Wawel cathedral, you can find as many as 18 chapels, of these the Sigismund Chapel (Kaplica Zygmuntowska).is a noteworthy one to see. It was constructed in between 1517 to 1533. The Sigismund has an outer golden dome and is regarded as the best resurgence Chapel.

From Mon to Sat, the castle is opened from 9.00 am to 5.00pm

On Sundays, it is opened from 12:15 to 5:00 p.m.
