Primary Education

Primary Education commences at the age of four for a most of the Nigerian children. The pupils study in primary schools for duration of 6 years and upon completion, come out with a school leaving certificate. Some of the subjects taught in the primary schools comprise English language, mathematics, Islamic knowledge studies, Christian Religious Knowledge, science and any of the native culture and language like Yoruba, Hausa-Fulani, and Igbo. Private institutions provide French, Computer science, and Fine Arts. The students of primary schools are expected to take a Common Entrance Examination to get qualified and gain access into the state and Federal Government and also into the private institutions.

Secondary education

The pupils spend a total of 6years in secondary schools, out of which three years are spend in Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS). Through the SSS2 (senior secondary school Class 2), the pupils take up exam at the GCE O’Level, which is not compulsory, however a majority of pupils attend to get themselves equipped for themselves for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, which the student ahs to take in the final year of SS3 (secondary school). In Nigeria the secondary schools are mostly administered by Private associations, Federal or state government.

Higher School education

The government has a major influence on university education. The country’s federal government has accept and taken education as a tool to develop the nation. Apart form several universities, there are fourteen state owned and thirteen federal polytechnic colleges. They were instituted to coach technological, middle level manpower. Some of the colleges have started giving degrees. The medium of instruction is English and the academic year is from the month of October to September.

The Universities in Nigeria are segregated into three groups as per the year in which they were established.

The universities of Ibadan and Nigeria Nsukka were form dint between the years 1948 and 1965 and these universities are called as First generation universities.

Some 12 universities were established in between 1970 to 1985 and they are termed as second generation universities.

The third generation universities were formed between the year 1985 and 1999.
