The Belem tower also called as the Tower of St. Vincent is a tower situated in the Santa Maria de Belem civil parish, in the Lisbon municipality. Since this fortified tower has played a vital role in the maritime discoveries of Portugal, during Age of Discoveries era, it has been honored and declared as a UNESCO world heritage site.

King John II in order to strengthen his defense system erected the Belem tower on the entrance of the Tagus River. It functioned as Lisbon’s ceremonial gateway. The tower is built in Manueline style of Portuguese architecture. The tower is made up of limestone. You will find tower covered with, motifs, sculpture made up of stone work. These patterns speak about the discoveries made by the Portages explorers. You can also find historic figures like St. Vincent and alien rhinoceros drawn by Durer.

You will find influence of Morocco architecture on the Moorish fashioned watch tower. This is because the Francisco de Arruda, the renowned architect who designed the tower had previously worked in Morocco on Portugese fortifications.
You can also see the subtle Venetian fashioned loggias, arcaded windowpane, our lady of safe homecoming statue, facing the Tagus Home coming lady statue was regarded as a protection insignia for the sailors.
