Jeronimos Monastery

The Jeronimos Monastery is situated adjacent to the Belkem parish shore. The monastery also called as the Hieronymites Monastery is designed on Manueline-style of Portugese architecture. Along with the Belem tower, the monastery was declared as UNESCO world heritage site.


The monastery is considered as an extraordinary emblem of Portugal's prosperity and influence. The monastery was built by King Manuel I. Previously it was a hermitage site established by the navigator, Prince Henry. Prior leaving to India, Vasco da Gama spent his pervious night at this place. Jeronimos Monastery was constructed to honor Vasco da Gama’s successful voyage to India and his return back to Portugal.


At the entrance to the monastery, you can find the tomb of Vasco da Gama. PoetLuis de Camões’ tomb, the author, who wrote the famous epic," The Lusiads" is also found at this monastery.


Some of the other noted persons' tombs you can find are the tomb of King Sebastião, King Manuel and poets Alexandre Herculano and Fernando Pessoa.


The cloisters of the monastery beautifully decorated with, coral, sea motifs, sea monsters, etc. are sure to impress you. The cathedral has large interiors; constructed with opulently relief decorated octagonal piers. You can also find a beautiful external garden with fountain laid out way back in 1940.
