St. George’s castle

:

The St. George’s castle is an important tourist destination in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. The castle is built in such a way, that you can view it from any part of Lisbon. The ancient portions of the citadel dates back to the sixth century, when the Visigoths, the Romans, and ultimately the moors fortified it. The Castle is devoted to the England’s patron saint, St.George honoring the Anglo-Portuguese treaty, which dates back to 1371 and it become a royal palace.

You will find the castle of St. George as a haven for peace. Once you cross the main gate, you can witness the King Afonso Henriques statue and a number of cannons. The remains of the present day place have a restaurant, a tiny museum in three secretive halls. In one of three chambers, King Manuel received Vasco da Gama.

A major portion of the castle has been shattered by the Great Earth quake, but still you can find the remains, lengthy wall extensions and some eighteen towers. Want to enjoy a panoramic view of the society, then ascend the tower or stroll along the fortifications. You can also chill at the beautiful castle gardens where you will be welcomed by geese, peacocks, and struts. The tower of Ulysses, one of the internal towers of the castle houses through the Câmara Escura, a periscope, which offers beautiful projected views of the city.
